What is the Memphis Lead Team?

The Memphis Lead Team (MLT) is a group of students dedicated to serving the University of Memphis as a peer education and training team on leadership and student success topics. This team is a representative of the Department of Student Leadership and Involvement and is responsible for coordinating leadership programs and services for any requesting students. Team members will increase their own knowledge of topics relating to leadership and will pass along that knowledge to other members of the campus community by facilitating workshops and other activities. As a member of the team, you will be a campus leader promoting and supporting student development on campus. Please read to the following expectations and qualifications to learn more about the team.

Memphis Lead Team Mission:

Memphis Lead Team is a service-oriented student organization devoted to enhancing the potential of groups within the University of Memphis community by providing resources, consultations, and training workshops that will provide and build upon a solid leadership foundation.

Learning Outcomes:

Members of the MLT will.

  • Develop an understanding of personal management and leadership-related topics.
  • Learn to employ effective communication with diverse audiences and environments.
  • Gain knowledge of group dynamics and shared leadership.
  • Form meaningful interpersonal relationships and expand their personal networks.
  • Build a foundational comprehension of evaluating organizational effectiveness.
  • Take an active role in social responsibility.

Expectations:

  • Conduct oneself in a professional manner at all times when representing the Department of Student Leadership and Involvement
  • Attend weekly meetings
    • These meetings are the team's opportunity to train in the various topics and facilitation techniques. They also serve as a forum to discuss upcoming programs and communicate committee planning.
  • Construct and present programs on various topics for all student organizations. Failure to show up at a scheduled program will result in dismissal from the MLT.
    • Develop and update a resource collection to create program documents and handouts as a student resource
  • Participate in all training retreats
  • Assist office staff and other team members in publicizing events
    • Marketing programs and workshops will be an effort of the entire team. This is a new group that will have to find a method seeking requests.
  • Assist with the recruitment, selection, and training of new team members
  • Assist in planning and facilitating activities for the Building Better Leaders Workshop Series and the annual Student Leadership Summit
  • Additional duties as decided by the team

What is a Program?

  • Think of a program as a breakout session or workshop at a conference. You will plan a discussion and select activities according to requested topics, and you will lead RSOs in those learning sessions.
  • An RSO will request a topic, and team members will utilize various resources to construct a workshop.
    • A program will fit the needs and wants of the group requesting MLT services.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrate a desire and willingness to learn more about leadership within the campus, community and yourself
  • Display a willingness to help others and serve on a team
  • Possess good communication skills in order to facilitate group discussions and present programs
  • Exhibit a strong work ethic and ability to manage your time
  • Be reliable, responsible, confident, and flexible
  • Maintain a grade point average of 2.75
  • Meet or exceed the requirements set forth in expectations portion of this position description
