For Erika Johnson, a senior psychology major at the University of Memphis, career advising has provided the tools necessary to succeed after graduation. Johnson, who came to U of M as a transfer student, was referred to Career Services by her academic advisor. “I felt somewhat lost when I got to Memphis, because I was unfamiliar with the resources here,” she said.
During her time at U of M, Johnson has worked closely with Clay Woemmel, the Associate Director of Career Services, for career advising. She said that Clay has helped her determine her post-graduation goals, talked with her about issues concerning relocation, provided her with information about graduate schools, and helped her find out-of-state job postings. They have worked together in person, over-the-phone, and even by email, and Johnson believes that Clay went out of his way to provide useful information and answer her questions. “Clay is very resourceful. He is friendly and personable, and he took a personal interest in helping me reach my goals. Clay deserves special kudos!” she said.
Johnson’s current career goals include graduate school, either in psychology or law. She also wants other U of M students to know about the advising opportunities available in Career Services. She said, “Resources are open and available if you seek them. If you really have an interest and desire to obtain your career goals, and you are uncertain about where to go, come to Career Services to get your questions answered.”
