Greg Hoffman
SUCCESS STORY

Harry Cash III - Alumni Success StoryFor Greg Hoffman (BBA ’04) changing careers from a healthcare consultant to a public accountant was a rewarding experience. Since January 2008, Hoffman has taken accounting courses at the Fogelman College of Business and Economics and met with Career Services for résumé advice, a mock interview, and help with eRecruiting.

In the fall of 2008, Hoffman participated in on-campus interviews for staff accountant positions and accepted an offer with Ernst & Young, LLP. Hoffman’s advice to other University of Memphis students preparing for their job search is to:

· Know Who You Are. Can you describe yourself in four words or less in 30 seconds? This will prepare you for networking events, job interviews, or even chance meetings where you may meet potential employers. Beyond financial reasons, know why you are building your career.
· Define Your Vision. Write down what you want to accomplish long-term in your career and the steps you think it will take to get you there. Be willing to start small.
· Identify a Mentor. Find a person you respect and who will help build your courage to start a career. Share your aspirations with this person and listen to their feedback.
· Utilize Career Services. Go to Career Services for a mock interview. Ask Career Services to review your résumé. Talk with your professors about jobs in your respective field. Use eRecruiting to find out more about upcoming interviews and career fairs.

What lies ahead? Hoffman is currently studying to pass the Uniform Certified Public Accountant Exam this summer.
