FOUR-YEAR SUCCESS CHECKLIST PLAN
Making the transition from college to a career is not an easy task. However, through planning and preparation you can ensure a more satisfying college experience and a successful job search upon graduation. In order to make the most out of your college career, and to get the most benefits in your senior year of job searching, the following steps should be followed while completing your freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior years.

First Year

  • Clarify who you are and what you want.
  • Take the Myers Briggs Type Indicator Test and the Strong Interest Inventory to determine what field/major would be a good fit for you. Testing can be arranged through Career Counseling, 211 Wilder Tower, 678-2068. Call today for an appointment!
  • Register with Career Services and upload your resume on eRecruiting.

Sophomore Year

  • Begin identifying career options for your major.
  • Begin developing leadership skills by joining student organizations and becoming involved in community activities.
  • Research companies through internet and other sources.
  • Gather information from The Dictionary of Occupational Titles and The Occupational Outlook Handbook with regard to job titles for a possible career path (www.bls.gov).
  • Seek out career-related internships, co-ops, and part-time jobs.
  • Attend career fairs (learn more>>).
  • View Off-Campus Part-Time Job Listings in .
  • Consider a Part-Time Job On Campus: Visit Student Employment, 103 Wilder Tower, 678-3708.

Junior Year

  • Acquire additional skills through activities and work related experiences.
  • Research employment opportunities for after graduation.
    Acquire an internship or co-op: Contact the Internship Coordinator regarding possible internship opportunities. Attend the Career and Internship Expo as a method of obtaining internships.
  • Attend workshops hosted by CS to acquire knowledge of resume writing and interview techniques.
  • Revise your resume in eRecruiting and become familiar with the on-campus interview process.
  • Practice your interview skills through a “mock interview.” Call CS for an appointment one week in advance.
  • Join student chapters of professional organizations.
  • Take graduate admission exams, compile information on graduate pro-grams, attend the Graduate School Fair.

Senior Year

  • Fine tune your resume in eRecruiting; participate in Virtual Career Fairs sponsored by CS.
  • Participate in on-campus recruiting during the fall and spring semesters before graduation.
  • Establish a plan for viewing job listings on a weekly basis through eRecruiting, Monster-TRAK, and Memphis Chamber of Commerce. Be proactive: Identify companies/ agencies of interest; send cover letters and resumes.
  • Use your networking contacts to learn of additional employment opportunities.
  • Develop a list of references.
  • Begin to evaluate job offers.
  • Complete and mail graduate school applications by the deadlines.
  • Notify Career Services of your post-graduation plans. Complete the post graduation survey on-line or via the mail.
