Job Search Strategies
In addition to on-campus interviewing, each student should try to arrange for as many interviews as possible with companies that do not come to campus. Personal efforts and energy on the part of any job seeker will pay off.

Locate the name and address of the employer, plus a contact person and the correct job title.

Also, make a list of your "network"---friends and family members. Let everyone know that you are seriously pursuing a career position, and hand out copies of your resume to these people. Request that they either pass it on if they hear of something, or get in touch with you so that you can follow up on the opening.

Read the classified advertisements in the news-paper, but do not depend solely on the newspaper for job leads. For every position that is advertised, there are probably ten openings that are never advertised. You should respond to advertisements that you feel are appropriate, but do not use the paper as your only job search tool. Additionally, use the classified ads as a source of company information. You can locate business names, addresses, recruiter names, etc. from the classified ads, even if the business is not currently hiring for a position in your field.

Follow-up calls to employers, networking visits, adding names and addresses to your wish list will pay off over time. By being consistent and persistent you will locate the perfect job.

If you plan to pursue a position out of town, you should contact the Chamber of Commerce in that town and request a listing of major employers. You may also wish to read the classified ads from the newspapers, usually the Sunday edition. Many newspaper classifieds, including the Commercial Appeal, are available on the Internet. Also, most libraries and newsstands will carry papers from other cities.
