NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF COLLEGES AND EMPLOYERS PRINCIPLES OF COLLEGE
RECRUITING FOR CANDIDATES
The University of Memphis and the National Association of Colleges
and Employers (NACE) expect students to adhere to the following principles
of college recruiting:
1. In seeking interviews, recognize your responsibility to analyze
your values, interests and abilities, and consider carefully your
employment objectives and appropriate ways of meeting them. Read available
literature, consult other sources for information about the employer,
and organize your thoughts in order that you may intelligently ask
and answer questions.
2. You should contact Career Services well in advance regarding desired
interviews or cancellations. Keep in mind, organizations that recruit
prospective employees at The University of Memphis invest time, money,
and energy in coming to our campus. Signing up for an interview repre-sents
a commitment on the part of the student. Interviews on campus should
be taken as seriously as those at the employer’s location. Missing
an interview, arriving late, and canceling on short notice are all
regarded as a "no-show" situation.
An individual who no-shows must write an approved letter of explanation
to the recruiter within five business days. If you miss an interview
or cancel within 48 hours of the interview, bring your typed version
of the letter within five business days, along with an addressed and
stamped envelope, to Career Services, 400 Wilder
Tower. The Director will personally review the letter to determine
if it is satisfactory.
Failure to follow these guidelines can result in the immediate revocation
of interviewing privileges through the Career Services
Office. Missing an interview appointment may mean that you lose out
on an excellent career opportunity, and it also keeps another student
from meeting with that employer.
3. You should use care in filling out forms that may be requested
in preparation for the interview, specifically job applications. They
should be typewritten and not handwritten if at all possible.
4. In your interviews, recognize that you are representing the University
of Memphis, as well as yourself, and be punctual and thoroughly business-like
in your conduct.
5. You should promptly acknowledge an invitation to visit an employer’s
premises. You should accept an invitation only when you are sincerely
interested in exploring employment.
6. When you are invited to visit an employer’s location at
the employer’s expense, keep an accurate record of actual expenses
incurred. The actual expenses pertaining to the trip should be the
only expenses reported on the expense report. If two or more employers
are visited on the same trip, expenses are pro-rated among them.
7. As soon as you determine that you will accept an offer, immediately
notify the employer. Do not continue to present yourself for interviews
after accepting an employment offer.
8. Your acceptance of an employment offer should be made in good
faith and with the sincere intention of honoring the employment commitment.
9. Notify Career Services when you accept employment and or admission
to a graduate or professional school.
