The History of Student Recreation and Fitness Center
The Department of Health, Physical Education
and Recreation managed the newly completed the HPER Complex / PE
building in 1971. The facility include two full size gyms;
indoor and outdoor 50 meter swimming pools with accompanying
dive wells with each having one 3 meter diving platforms and two
1 meter springboards; a combat room for boxing, wrestling, judo
and karate; nautilus circuit weight room with free weights;
large men's/women's locker rooms with over 1000 lockers; full
service towel laundry room; 9 Handball/racquetball courts; 21
outdoor tennis courts; one multi-use field; two class rooms;
outdoor equipment room; recreational equipment room; intramural,
faculty and administrative offices. This was one of the
finest recreation facilities for that time.
In 1979 to 1982 the Campus Recreation department moved from HPER to
Student Affairs then back to HPER and finally back to Student
Affairs in the Department of Student Life in 1996. In
1999, the facility was renovated to it's current configuration.
The Finch Basketball practice facility was added at the same time. In January
2000, the building was rededicated at its grand opening as the
Student Recreation and Fitness Center housing Campus Recreation
Intramural Services and the Larry O. Finch Facility.
