HAPPY NEW
YEAR!
Starting
a new semester can be exhilarating, challenging, and anxiety provoking. “Will I
do better this semester? Did I learn ‘what not to do’ last semester to improve
my grades this time? Will I make more friends? How will I maintain my
scholarship and my social life?” Seeking friendship and involvement at the U of
M continue to be key strategies for success at college. Encourage your student
to settle back into a healthy, balanced routine of academics, work, social
activities, and rest as soon as possible.

To those who have not been able to attend, you can review the chat transcripts
on our website, http://saweb.memphis.edu/studentaffairs/parentinfo.htm . Simply click on “Parent Chat” and you will find the session
posted by date and topic. We will continue to post the chats as they progress.

http://saweb.memphis.edu/chat/session/live,
give yourself a nickname (just a nickname or something, best not to use your
full name) and join the chat.
*We
have noted that some of you would prefer evening chats. Though the next one is
during lunch, we hope to follow up a parent chat in the evening.
There will be a brainstorming Parents Club
meeting on Saturday Feb 16 from 10-11:30am at the Alumni Center. Continental breakfast will be served. All
parents are welcome, not just members of the Parents Club. We will tell you
about our upcoming Parents Weekend (hopefully April 12-13), a possible
Parent/Student trip and ask you for other ideas/concerns/comments. We hope to
see you there! Jeans and warm-up suits are just fine for your attire!

Registration will be cancelled
if students have not satisfied fee payment requirements by 4:30 p.m. on
Thursday, January 24, 2008.
Students may
have already been assessed a $100 Late Payment Fee if they missed their
appropriate fee payment deadline.
Please note that unless financial
aid, scholarship, and/or sponsorship covers 100% of enrollment fees, students MUST pay in full or sign up for the Installment Payment Plan
(IPP) online.
Payment
can be made by credit card or e-check on TigerXpress through the
Account$ tab on the Spectrum Portal. Heavy volume usually occurs during the
final days of fee payment. Avoid delays by paying as early as possible.
Students remain responsible for
on-time payment of fees, even if they do not receive or open their online
invoice. They also remain responsible
for on-time payment of fees, even if their aid, scholarship, and/or sponsorship
are not in place by the fee payment deadline.
Students and their authorized
users can pay their accounts on TigerXpress or check to verify that they have a
zero balance or are on the IPP. Please
visit our website at http://bf.memphis.edu/finance/bursar for other important information.
Enrollment
Verification
If you need proof that your student is
enrolled at the University this Spring, you or your student should request an
Enrollment Verification. This can be done through the web (student), or by
e-mail, phone, or FAX (either of you). More information.
Students and
Communicating with the University
§
E-mail: Students are expected to check their U of M e-mail regularly because e-mail is the chief way in which the
University conveys vital information to its students. Please encourage your
students to check their University e-mail regularly or to forward their e-mail
to an account which they will check regularly.
§
U-Number: Each student is assigned a unique
University ID number, referred to as the U-Number (it always starts with a
“U”). Encourage your student to learn his or her
U-Number and to use this when
communicating with the University, especially when using e-mail. Now that the
University uses U-Numbers, students should never send social security numbers
by e-mail; they should use U-Numbers to identify their records.
RESIDENCE LIFE AND DINING
SERVICES
Fall
2008/Spring 2009 Room Reservation
10 AM –
Wednesday, February 20 – Friday, February 22
Room Reservation Request Forms will be
distributed to current residents and must be submitted to the appropriate
Residence Life staff member. Current residents who fail to reserve a room for
the 2008 Fall Semester must begin the application process as a new applicant by
completing a new housing application and will be assigned based on date of
application. Students who are in debt status with the Department of Residence
Life and Dining Services will not be permitted to reserve a room until the debt
is cleared.
An assignment packet will be sent to the
student’s campus postal box prior to check out for the Spring Semester, along
with information concerning check-in procedures and rental prepayments for the
fall. Students who do not have a campus
postal box will have their information mailed to their permanent
addresses. A deadline will be given to
make the $200 rental prepayment. Students
who fail to make the prepayment by the designated deadline will have their room
assignments administratively canceled.
The $200 rental prepayment will apply toward the semester’s rent. The room reservation request is a binding
contractual agreement. Students who plan
to cancel their rooms after reserving a room, must cancel by July 1, 2008, in
order to receive a refund of the $200 rental prepayment. Students canceling after July 1 will still be
responsible for the $200 rental prepayment.
Summer Room
Reservation
Summer housing will be available in Carpenter
Complex. First Summer Room Reservation
will be held Wednesday, March 19, 2008.
Second Summer Room Reservation will be held June 17, 2008, for first
summer residents. If housing is required
during the break between the Spring Semester and First Summer opening, students
may request this on the First Summer Room Reservation Form. Accommodations will be available in
Richardson Towers until First Summer check-in on June 6, 2008, for an
additional cost. If only Second Summer housing is required, the student must
complete an application for Second Summer Session in the Residence Life and
Dining Services Office, 011
Closing for
Spring Break
The University of Memphis residence halls,
with the exception of Richardson Towers and Carpenter Complex will close at 12
Noon on Saturday, March 1 and will reopen on Sunday, March 9. NO ONE WILL BE ALLOWED TO REMAIN, OR BE
READMITTED TO THE RESIDENCE HALLS DURING THIS TIME. Residents are not required
to move their belongings out of the halls; however, residents should take all
valuables with them when they leave.
TIGERTEXT EMERGENCY TEXT
MESSAGING
Please encourage your student to register for
TigerText, the University’s emergency text messaging system. This optional
service will only be used in the event of an on-campus emergency, an
unscheduled university closing, or a delay or cancellation of classes due to,
for instance, inclement weather.
To register, have your student go to http://tigertext.memphis.edu and log in using their U of M UUID and
password. They will need to have their cell phone handy to complete the
registration process. There is no charge for signing up; however, standard text
messaging rates apply.
The TigerText text messaging service is just
one of the methods the University will use to communicate emergency information
to students, faculty, and staff. The University will continue to use a variety
of other methods as appropriate, including email, telephone and an outdoor
emergency warning system.
For more information about these efforts and
emergency planning in general at the University of Memphis, visit http://www.memphis.edu/crisis.
Encourage students to keep their personal
information secure. Be
sure to remind students to close all internet browser windows by clicking the
red “X” in the upper right corner of their browser window and closing all open
tabs. Whenever they use a shared machine in campus computer labs, they
should always log out of the computer by double-clicking the LOG OUT icon on
the computer’s desktop.
Student email is moving. The University’s new Exchange email
system will have more storage and faster service. Students can begin
using Exchange now or wait to be automatically converted to the new system on
February 4. Their email address will stay the same, but the email login
page will change from postoffice.memphis.edu to ummail.memphis.edu - Find out more details here: http://tigertech.memphis.edu/email/.
Technology help is always available. Client Support Services wants students
to enjoy using all the technology resources available on campus. If your
student needs tech help, encourage them to visit the Helpdesk (Administration
Building room 124) or the 24-hour labs located in Smith Chemistry Building and
McWherter Library where Client Support Services staff will be glad to assist
them.
TESTING OUT OF SELECTED CLASSES
It is possible for UofM
students to “test out” of some classes and receive course credit. Acceptable
scores must be attained before course credit is awarded. The three methods that
students can use to get course credit by “testing out” are CLEP, credit by
exam, and DANTES. Success in these endeavors may help students graduate sooner
and save money at the same time.
For more information, http://saweb.memphis.edu/cclt/HTML/testing2.htm
or contact the Testing Center, 112 Brister Hall, Phone: 901-678-2428.
