February 8, 2005

Warm weather and sunny days are on their way and we are seeing more and more of our students out between classes enjoying our beautiful campus.

It’s a busy time for our students and there are many exciting extracurricular events planned during the next several months.  February is Black History Month with events planned including the Urban Bush Woman performance tomorrow (Feb 9th) in the Michael D. Rose Theater from 7pm -9pm, an Evening of Jazz with Kirk Whalum on the 18th and “Dialogue” with Harry Belafonte on the 24th.   Link to the entire BHM calendar www.people.memphis.edu/%7Eminority/blackhistorymonthcalendar2005.htm

On February 12th, all true blue fans are encouraged to attend Basketball Homecoming—further information included later in newsletter.

Academically, the students are being diligent in hitting the books.  The weather is getting warmer and we are seeing more students congregating on the student plaza studying, enjoying the sunshine and our spectacular fountain .  Till next month….may you be safe and happy.

HOPE Lottery Scholarship Rules

If you child is attending the University of Memphis on a HOPE Lottery Scholarship please click on the link http://www.tnscholardollars.org/images/telsrules.pdf   The rules are changing constantly and it is to your student’s benefit to keep abreast of the latest information.

Misinformation and misunderstanding of the rules by recipients is not an acceptable appealable reason if the HOPE Scholarship is lost by a student.  Remember that every grade counts.  Repeated courses are counted as well as the original grade in the calculation of the HOPE grade point average.

EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT PROGRAM (ESP)

Dr. Barbara Bekis is Coordinator of the Educational Support Program.   The main office is located in 217 Mitchell Hall and you may contact a member of the ESP staff at (901) 678-2704, Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.  ESP offers free tutoring for University of Memphis students who needs help improving their study skills or who are having problems in a particular class.  U of M students must be taking the course for which they are requesting help at the time of their request.  There are six ESP Learning Centers located on our campus and each one is staffed by ESP tutors including graduate and undergraduate students, as well as part-time instructors.  The Academic Enhancement Center (AEC) offers individual tutoring in general education courses and foreign languages.  In addition, time management and note taking, reading for comprehension, critical thinking, test preparation and test taking consultations are available.  The other five Learning Centers are Business, English, Math, Developmental Math and Science.  All tutors must complete 15 hours of training and are ESP-certified.  Appointments for tutoring and/or consultation are available and vary by location; walk-ins are always welcome.  To find out the individual centers’ hours of operation and locations click on www.people.memphis.edu/~aetcpu/html/lrngctrs.htm

  <>NEW CAREER SHADOWING PROGRAM—CAREER ENCOUNTERS

Often the best, most inspiring influences come from personal experience. A new career shadowing program at the U of M allows student to learn from volunteers (Sponsors) willing to educate students about life in the real world. The program, Career Encounters, allows students to explore their career interests while visiting with local businessmen and women at their job sites. The Career Encounter can range from a simple informational phone call to a full-day meeting.

Career Encounters emphasizes professionalism and encourages students to inquire about how their educational interests relate to certain occupations. The plan is for all students from freshmen to graduate students to become aware and participate in this exciting opportunity before graduation. As a result, Career Encounters will help students educate themselves about their career choices and will allow for the formation of strong relationships with the greater Memphis business community.

The program initiative has been available to students since January 2005.  Thus far, several students have already taken advantage of the opportunity and have selected a “match” from the over 50 committed agencies located in Memphis and nationwide.  Career Encounters is always looking to expand its list of sponsors. So, if you are interested in serving as a sponsor or have questions about the program, please contact Will Adams in the Career and Psychological Counseling Center at rwadams@memphis.edu or 901-678-2068. More information about the program is available online at http://www.people.memphis.edu/~aetcpu/images/CareerEncounters.pdf.
