The student’s social security number/student identification number and PIN are needed to access the CASHNet fee payment site, or the student can set up a Parent PIN, which will allow YOU to go online to pay fees.  Go to http://bf.memphis.edu/finance/bursar/whatsnew.php for details and “how to.”

RESIDENCE LIFE AND DINING SERVICES

Change in Rental Payment Procedurs

Beginning with the Fall 2005 Semester, students will no longer be required to submit a $100 application/reservation deposit.  Current residents may request their $100 application/reservation deposit to be refunded by completing a Request for Deposit Refund  Form in the Residence Life and Dining Services Office at the completion of the last semester for which you will be living on campus prior to the Fall 2005 Semester.

These forms will be distributed to current residents when they check out of their current rooms for the Spring 2005 Semester.

A rental prepayment of $200.00 will be required after an assignment is made for future semesters.  Current residents who reserve a room for the Fall 2005/Spring 2006 Semesters will be sent an assignment packet with their official room assignment and check-in information.  A deadline to submit the $200.00 prepayment will be given in the assignment packet.  Students who fail to make the rental prepayment by the designated deadline will have their room assignments administratively canceled.  The $200.00 is a rental prepayment and will apply toward the semester’s rent for which it is being paid.  Students canceling for Fall 2005 prior to July 1, 2005, will be refunded their entire $200.00 rental prepayment; however, students canceling after July 1, 2005, will not receive a refund.

Summer Room Reservation

Summer housing will be available in Carpenter Complex.  First Summer Room Reservation will be held Wednesday, March 23, 2005.  Second Summer Room Reservation will be held June 14, 2005, for first summer residents.  If housing is required during the break between the Spring Semester and First Summer opening, students may request this on the First Summer Room Reservation Form.  Accommodations will be available in Richardson Towers until First Summer check-in on June 3, 2005, for an additional cost. If only Second Summer housing is required, the student must complete an application for Second Summer Session in the Residence Life and Dining Services Office, 011 Richardson Towers prior to 2nd Summer.

Closing for Spring Break

The University of Memphis residence halls, with the exception of Richardson Towers and Carpenter Complex will close as 12 Noon on Saturday, March 5 and will reopen on Sunday, March 13.  NO ONE WILL BE ALLOWED TO REMAIN, OR BE READMITTED TO THE RESIDENCE HALLS DURING THIS TIME. Residents are not required to move their belongings out of the halls; however, residents should take all valuables with them when they leave.

Great News!

U of M Student Receives UNCF/Merck Science Research Scholarship

University of Memphis student Izu Iwueke was selected as a recipient of the 2005 United Negro College Fund/Merck Undergraduate Science Research Scholarship. The scholarship is designed to increase the number of African-Americans in biomedical research careers.

The award includes a scholarship of up to $25,000 and two summer research internships with combined stipends of at least $10,000. Iwueke’s is one of 15 such awards made this year.

“I'm delighted that one of our honors students was selected for the UNCF/Merck Scholarship,” said Melinda Jones, director of the University’s Honors Program.   “Izu is already a dedicated and accomplished researcher who has participated in summer research internships at the University of Memphis and Vanderbilt University.  His career goal is to become a physician-scientist performing cancer research, and I have no doubt that he will achieve this goal.”

U of M Professor Receives Multiple Professional Honors

A University of Memphis professor, who served his faculty sabbatical at the Harvard School of Public Health, has recently received several notable honors. Dr. Albert Okunade, an economics professor in the Fogelman College of Business and Economics, has been nominated to receive the International Health Professional of the Year honor. This award is “made available to only a few illustrious individuals whose achievements and leadership stand out in the international medical community as decreed by the Research and Advisory Board,” according to the International Biographical Center of Cambridge, England.

Okunade recently was appointed to the board of trustees of the American Society of Health Economists (ASHE), a professional organization dedicated to promoting excellence in health economics research in the United States.  ASHE serves as a forum for emerging ideas and empirical results of health economics research. Okunade is serving a multi-year term along with a distinguished group of health economists from leading U.S. academic institutions, including Harvard, Yale, the University of Chicago, Carnegie Mellon and the University of Michigan.

He also was selected to the Scientific Advisory Committee of The International Health Economics Association (iHEA), the largest professional body of health economists in the world. He refereed paper proposals for the 5th Biennial iHEA World Congress, scheduled for July in Barcelona, Spain.
