Parent E-News

April 13, 2005

Hello!  Spring has arrived in full force and we are in our final month of the Spring semester before exams start.  Classes will be ending April 27, 2005 and students will be taking final exams beginning April 29, 2005.

During the Spring semester each year the University takes time to recognize our students who have distinguished themselves in scholarship, leadership and service.  The President's Leadership Recognition Awards Ceremony will be held on Sunday, April 17th, at 3:00 p.m., in the University Center-Faulkner Lounge and Honors Assembly will be held on Sunday, April 24, at 3:00 p.m., in the Michael Rose Theatre Lecture Hall Auditorium.

The Office of Minority Affairs will celebrate our community's diversity with a Multicultural Festival Friday, April 15, from noon to 2:30 p.m. on the University Center Student Plaza.  The festival will highlight music, food, dance, and art of various cultures.

The Herff College of Engineering at the University of Memphis will offer a wonderful program, "Girls Experiencing Engineering," to girls entering grades 10-12 who live in Shelby County  to help them learn more about engineering through this fun, learn-by-doing program.  The session will be held June 6-10 and will run from 8 a.m. until noon at the Herff College, there is no charge for the program.  To apply, or for more information, visit the GEE website at www.ce.memphis.edu/gee.

Till next month….may you be safe and happy.

For MAY 2005 Upcoming Graduates

Do you have a son or daughter graduating in May 2005? If so, they will receive an email (directed to their U of M email address) from Career and Employment Services later this month (mid April) asking them to complete an electronic Post Graduation Survey indicating their status following graduation.  We are tracking the number of students who have secured full time employment at graduation, are still seeking employment, or are going to graduate school.  It is very important that they complete this survey information.  The information is used to compile a detailed comprehensive report to the Deans of the colleges showing where our students go upon graduation.   As you can understand, this report is extremely helpful to other students who will be nearing graduation and seeking employment. This survey will just take a few minutes! Encourage your graduate to fill it out.

RESIDENCE LIFE & DINING SERVICES

Change in Rental Payment Procedures

Beginning with the Fall 2005 Semester, students will no longer be required to submit a $100 application/reservation deposit.  Current residents may request their $100 application/reservation deposit to be refunded by completing a Request for Deposit Refund  Form in the Residence Life and Dining Services Office at the completion of the last semester for which you will be living on campus prior to the Fall 2005 Semester.

These forms will be distributed to current residents when they check out of their current rooms for the Spring 2005 Semester.

A rental prepayment of $200.00 will be required after an assignment is made for future semesters.  Current residents who reserve a room for the Fall 2005/Spring 2006 Semesters will be sent an assignment packet with their official room assignment and check-in information.  A deadline to submit the $200.00 prepayment will be given in the assignment packet.  Students who fail to make the rental prepayment by the designated deadline will have their room assignments administratively canceled.  The $200.00 is a rental prepayment and will apply toward the semester’s rent for which it is being paid.  Students canceling for Fall 2005 prior to July 1, 2005, will be refunded their entire $200.00 rental prepayment; however, students canceling after July 1, 2005, will not receive a refund.

Spring 2005 Check-Out

The residence halls will close for the 2005 Spring Semester on May 6, 2005, by 3 PM.  Carpenter Complex will close for the 2005 Spring Semester on May 27, 2005.

Summer Cancellation Deadline

The deadline for students to cancel their First Summer room assignment and receive 100% of the application/reservation deposit is May 1. Students canceling after May 1, and prior to June 3 will receive 50% of their application/reservation deposit.

REGISTRAR

Final Exams

Classes will be ending April 27, 2005 and students will be taking final exams beginning April 29, 2005. Since attendance is compulsory, it is important that students know when and where their exams will be taking place.  Remind your son/daughter to check the Registrar’s website at http://www.enrollment.memphis.edu/registrar/calendars/05s/05sfinal.htm for information concerning the exam schedule. For additional information regarding calendar information, students may call the Student and Faculty Services Office at 901-678-2810.

Grading Information

Grades are available on TIGERWEB as soon as the instructors enter them. However, the grades and academic statistics are subject to review and update until they become official, usually by the Thursday following the session’s last exam period (May 12, 2005). Your student should recheck his/her grades, stats, and academic action after that day.

Grades are not routinely mailed out. If your son/daughter needs a printed copy of his/her grade report (for example, to go to an employer), he/she will need to request a grade mailer. For information on how to view grades, or how to request a grade mailer, go to http://www.enrollment.memphis.edu/registrar/Grades/grades_stdt.htm. Note: Grade Mailers may be requested only for the University term that has just ended. This option is available for a few weeks only beginning after grades are official. Grade Mailers are sent by U.S. Mail and are sent to the student’s Permanent Address.

Parents’ Requests For Student Records

Parents may request a copy of their student’s record if the student has been claimed as a dependent for tax purposes in the most recent tax year. The University of Memphis suggests you first discuss your intentions with your son/daughter. He/she may share the information you need, avoiding further action on your part. Also, since we are required to notify the student in writing that you have requested and will be given a copy of the record, you may want to give your student some advance warning. If your son/daughter does not share the information, obtain, complete, and sign a Parent Request for Disclosure of Education Record Information and Certification of Dependent Status form. This form may be printed from our website: http://www.enrollment.memphis.edu/registrar/forms/index.html.

Mail or deliver the form to: The University of Memphis, Assistant Registrar – Student Records, 003 Wilder Tower, Memphis, TN 38152-3520. You may also visit Student Records 003 Wilder Tower, and complete a copy there. You will need a photo ID for identification.

Consent To Release Information

Your son/daughter may authorize the release of his/her record to someone other than a University of Memphis employee by providing his/her consent on the Consent to Release Education Record Information form. This form can be found on our website: http://www.enrollment.memphis.edu/registrar/forms/index.html.

The form should be completed and given to the Assistant Registrar – Student Records, 003 Wilder Tower. Students may also complete the form in the Student Records Office, 003 Wilder Tower.

BURSAR

We are streamlining our payment options and getting ready to offer statements and invoices online!

Effective April 8, 2005, we will no longer accept payments over the telephone; however, students will still be able to make payments online by credit card or by mail.

We now have a handy tuition calculator!  Please visit our website at http://bf.memphis.edu/finance/bursar/tuition.php to get a quick calculation of estimated tuition for the summer or fall.

Meet eBursar!

Beginning in mid-May, we will offer students some exciting new features through our upgraded system:
