Subject: Virginia Tech Tragedy
This was sent from the Vice President for Student Affairs, Dr. Rosie Phillips Bingham, to the campus community today:

We at the University of Memphis are saddened by the tragedy that has occurred at Virginia Tech, and our prayers are with the victims’ families.

We want to assure our students, faculty, staff, and visitors to the campus that their safety is paramount.  Our police force is experienced and well-trained, and we investigate and take seriously all calls that we receive.

Additionally, our Residence Life staff and student workers are provided information on how to identify potential problems and respond accordingly.  Each semester, students are reminded and encouraged to contact University Police about any safety concern they may have.

Although it is not always possible to prevent every threat, the University of Memphis recognizes the dangers present in today’s world, and we have taken steps to minimize such dangers on our campus.

In light of today’s events, we remind you to be alert to your surroundings and to contact University Police – 678-HELP (4357) in the event of any suspicious persons or activity.
