May 11, 2005

Hello!  The Spring semester officially ended on April 27th and I know that you are looking forward to sharing some quality time with your sons and daughters.

For parents that have a son or daughter that will be a FRESHMAN beginning with the Fall 2005 semester, please encourage them to attend Frosh Camp.  There will be two sessions this summer (see article in newsletter).  This is a fantastic opportunity for them to get acquainted with the University and develop a sense of belonging before plunging into their first days on campus.

Please note our summer session dates and deadlines under the Registrar information in this newsletter.  There is a convenient web link you can use to access the dates and deadlines.

Till next month….may you be safe and happy.

The Class of 2004-2005 has good reason to be hopeful!

Entry level markets this year are stronger in several fields   Salary survey information shows salary offers to new college graduates are climbing at a steady pace.  Business and engineering stand out with average salary increases nearly across the board.  In addition, liberal arts and computer science salaries are showing increases which indicate positive momentum in the job market.  This is very encouraging news for this year's class of college graduates.

If your son or daughter has graduated in May 2005, and will still be seeking a full time job opportunity upon graduation, encourage them to contact Career and Employment Services for assistance. Career and Employment Services provides assistance in fine tuning a professional look resume, the development of strong interview skills, and help with securing a full time job.   Encourage your son or daughter to make an appointment if they need help.

We also encourage parents of students in their junior year of college to encourage their son or daughter to consider an internship opportunity before they graduate.  Sarabeth Beekman, Internship Coordinator, in Career and Employment Services, is available to meet with students to provide assistance in securing an internship.

You may schedule an appointment for any of these services by calling 678-2239.

RESIDENCE LIFE & DINING SERVICES

Change in Rental Payment Procedures

Beginning with the Fall 2005 Semester, students will no longer be required to submit a $100 application/reservation deposit.  Current residents may request their $100 application/reservation deposit to be refunded by completing a Request for Deposit Refund  Form in the Residence Life and Dining Services Office at the completion of the last semester for which you will be living on campus prior to the Fall 2005 Semester.

These forms will be distributed to current residents when they check out of their current rooms for the Spring 2005 Semester.

A rental prepayment of $200.00 will be required after an assignment is made for future semesters.  Current residents who reserve a room for the Fall 2005/Spring 2006 Semesters will be sent an assignment packet with their official room assignment and check-in information.  A deadline to submit the $200.00 prepayment will be given in the assignment packet.  Students who fail to make the rental prepayment by the designated deadline will have their room assignments administratively canceled.  The $200.00 is a rental prepayment and will apply toward the semester’s rent for which it is being paid.  Students canceling for Fall 2005 prior to July 1, 2005, will be refunded their entire $200.00 rental prepayment; however, students canceling after July 1, 2005, will not receive a refund.

First Summer Check-In

Check-In for First Summer 2005 will be Friday, June 3 between 1 PM and 4 PM at Carpenter Complex.

Summer Cancellation Deadline

The deadline for students to cancel their First Summer room assignment and receive 100% of the application/reservation deposit is May 1. Students canceling after May 1, and prior to June 3 will receive 50% of their application/reservation deposit.

Don’t' forget about Frosh Camp

Frosh Camp helps incoming students establish friendships, learn about what is offered on campus and begin the adjustment to life at The University of Memphis.  In addition to session about how to make your college experience the best it can be, there will be plenty of fun stuff to do, too!  The dates for the two sessions are as follows:

Camp NaCoMe offers your favorite camp pastimes- swimming, hiking, basketball, or just lots of room to meet people.

Frosh Camp will tell your student everything he or she needs to know to have a successful first year. They will meet many new the people that will be around them for the next four years.  He or she will come into contact with a group of counselors that are among the most visible on campus and who are willing to help him or her however possible.  In addition, your student will be ready to go to his or her first football game already knowing the Fight Song.  Your student will leave camp ready for and excited about starting college at The University of Memphis!

Three all-expense paid nights away from home in a comfy cabin, three all-you-can-eat meals each day, and even transportation to and from camp. All this is just $40! Just think, only $10 per day of fun your student will never forget.

Registration information can be attained at http://www.people.memphis.edu/~froshcamp/

Parents of new U of M students with disabilities:

Student Disability Services (SDS) recommends that new U of M students with disabilities register with SDS well in advance of the start of Fall Semester. Students are asked to complete an intake form and to deliver appropriate disability-related documentation to SDS. After analyzing the documentation, SDS will set up an intake
appointment for the student; parents are welcome at the intake meeting. If possible, the intake meeting should occur prior to New Student Orientation. Call 678-2880 and ask to speak with an SDS Coordinator who will be able to explain the process in more detail.

Many students with disabilities benefit by learning to use appropriate Assistive Technology (AT), such as voice recognition software, screen readers, screen enlargers, and books on CD, to counter the effects of their disability. This summer, SDS staff will be teaching how to use various kinds of AT to students with disabilities who are interested in learning   If this sounds like something appropriate for your U of M student, have the student call 678-2880 to discuss his/her AT needs.
