MEMPHIS READS

This fall’s freshmen at the University of Memphis are participating in Memphis Reads, the University’s reading program is now in its second year and all incoming freshmen are required to read the designated book.  The reading program is designed to inspire community spirit and a sense of identity with the University.  The book is required reading for certain courses and will be the topic of discussions, lectures and other events on campus.  This year’s selection is I Have a Dream:  Writings and Speeches that Changed the World:  75^th Anniversary Edition by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (edited by James M. Washington).

Introducing TigerXpress-  

New Electronic Bill & Payment Suite for Fall 2007 

The Bursar’s Office is in the process of implementing new systems and enhancements for the Fall 2007 term!  Some of the features below are available NOW and require students to update their account online to take advantage of these conveniences for the Fall 2007 term.

Available now:

• eRefunds – Students should sign up online for eRefunds (direct deposit) in order to receive excess financial aid or fee refunds for Fall 2007.
  • Students should sign up on TigerXpress, even if they currently have direct deposit information on file in the Bursar’s Office.
  • SIGN UP is done through Spectrum Student Portal and then by selecting the Account$ tab.
  • 10 Lucky Students will win an iPod Shuffle by signing up for eRefunds!  Anyone signed up by 7/13 is eligible.*
• Authorized user – Students may Log in NOW to add authorized users (such as YOU, their parents) to their TigerXpress account.
  • Beginning in August 2007, students’ authorized users can view/pay their fees.
  • Students must re-establish any user(s) for the Fall term on TigerXpress, even if they currently have authorized users established through eBursar.
  • SIGN UP is done through Spectrum Student Portal and then by selecting the Account$ tab.
• Tuition Estimator – The tuition estimator is available to calculate estimated Fall 2007 fees.

* University of Memphis employees and their dependents are not eligible.

Fall 2007 Check-In

The residence halls will be open during the following hours for check-in:

Friday, August 24, 2007

Saturday, August 25, 2007

1 PM – 4:30 PM

Students who are not able to check-in by 4:30 PM on Saturday, August 25 should contact the Residence Life and Dining Services Office at 901-678-2295 and be placed on the Late Arrival List to avoid the forfeiture of the $200 rental prepayment and the loss of the housing assignment.

Fall 2007 Rental Prepayment

A rental prepayment of $200.00 will be required after an assignment is made for the Fall 2007 Semester.  A deadline to submit the $200.00 prepayment will be given in the assignment packet, which is mailed to the student.  Students who fail to make the rental prepayment by the designated deadline will have their room assignments administratively canceled.  The $200.00 is a rental prepayment and will apply toward the semester’s rent for which it is being paid.  Rental payments should be made to The University of Memphis, Bursar’s Office, P. O. Box 1000, Dept. 313, Memphis, TN  38148-0313. Students canceling after July 1, 2007, will not receive a refund and will be responsible for the $200 rental prepayment. 

Fall 2007 Room Change

The Room Change period will be Thursday, August 30 and Friday, August 31 from 1 PM until 4 PM.  Students will receive information regarding room change when they check-in.  Students are expected to occupy the room stated on the Fall 2007 housing contract until the room change period. 

MEAL PLANS

Residence hall students wishing to enroll in a meal plan should submit the Meal Plan Request Form included in the Housing Assignment Packet.  Forms should be returned to Residence Life and Dining Services, 011 Richardson Towers, Memphis, TN  38152 or may be faxed to 901-678-5219.  Freshmen First and Freshmen Honors and Emerging Leadership recipients assigned to the 3^rd, 8^th, &  9^th  floors of Richardson Towers North or Richardson Towers South are required to purchase a meal plan.

STUDENT HEALTH SERVICES

We want to remind you about student immunizations.

• There have been a couple of bacterial meningitis cases lately in the news, and STUDENT HEALTH SERVICES strongly urges all students to be immunized with Menactra to prevent this disease. Menactra also will prevent a person from being a carrier of meningococcal meningitis, which can spread the disease. Bacterial meningitis has a very high morbidity and mortality rate, and college freshmen are in the highest risk group.
• Hepatitis B vaccination is another important immunization recommended for students. It consists of three spaced doses and prevents this type of liver disease, and the resulting complications.
• We have scheduled flu shots for the fall, and urge all students to be immunized. It will be especially helpful in the event of the avian flu, and also in diagnosing other systemic types of infections.

• The Shot Nurse will be on campus on the following dates to administer these immunizations: 

July 13, 17, 20, 31 or August 3

1:00 – 2:00 pm

Brister Hall, Room 220. 

Last call is August 28, 12 – 3 pm in Student Health Services (SHS).
