Below is a message that went out to all students yesterday.  We thought you would like to know about some of the improvements we are making since the Virginia Tech tragedy last year.

Dear
University
Community:

As a means of enhancing our ability to communicate during a crisis, I am pleased to announce the launch of the University of Memphis TigerText emergency text messaging system.

This optional service will only be used in the event of an on-campus emergency, an unscheduled university closing, or a delay or cancellation of classes due to, for instance, inclement weather. Registering is quick and easy - all you need is your cell phone. Additional details are below.

The TigerText text messaging service is just one of the methods the University will use to communicate emergency information to students, faculty, and staff. We will continue to use a variety of other methods as appropriate, including email, telephone and, beginning the fall 2007 semester, an outdoor emergency warning system.

For more information about these efforts and emergency planning in general at the University of Memphis, visit http://www.memphis.edu/crisis.

Sincerely,

Charles Lee

Vice President for Business & Finance

<>TigerText Registration Instructions

To register, visit http://tigertext.memphis.edu and log in using your U of M UUID and password. Be sure to have your cell phone handy to complete the registration process. There is no charge for signing up; however, standard text messaging rates apply.

<>You will be forwarded to a web page that will allow you to create an account within the TigerText (e2campus) system. For security purposes, DO NOT use the same username and password for this account as you use at the university — the username and password that you choose for TigerText will be stored within a third-party vendor’s system and not within a university system.

Select the type of messages you would like to receive, or select to receive both types of messages:

<>In the ‘Opt-out By’ field, select the date that you wish to no longer receive TigerText messages. If you anticipate that you will graduate in the fall of 2008, for example, select an opt-out date of December 31, 2008. You will be able to change this date in the future by logging in to your TigerText account.

For registration assistance, consult the Frequently Asked Questions at the TigerText web site or contact the ITD Helpdesk at 678-8888.
