Welcome Letter from the President

Dear Parents:

I am pleased that your student has chosen to attend the University of Memphis for the 2005-2006 academic year.  We are very proud of the high quality of education that is provided by the University of Memphis.  You and your family can now share our pride.

These are exciting times for our University, because our students, faculty and programs are competing at the highest levels. Recently, student Jessica Swan became a Truman Scholar; Professor David Appleby won the prestigious Peabody Award; Michele Alexandre received a Fulbright Scholar grant; the Cecil C. Humphrey's School of Law was named an excellent value by National Jurist magazine; and the students at the Loewenberg School of Nursing achieved a 100% licensure examination pass rate.

In athletics we have many national competitions.  Among our most successful student players is Heisman Trophy candidate DeAngelo Williams.  You can see him and our football team when our season kicks off on Monday, September 5 when we play Ole Miss at the Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium.

We hope your student will get involved in campus life from musical concerts and the arts to many athletic competitions.  In addition, there are approximately 150 organizations available to our students.  During Welcome Week, August 26 to September 5, new students will learn about the school year and will become acquainted with the student organizations and the University.  A variety of exciting activities is planned over the next eleven days.   Convocation, a key event for freshmen, is on Monday, August 29.  Welcome Week will culminate with Frosh Frenzy on Monday, September 5.  Frosh Frenzy, geared towards our first year students, is a tradition that takes place on the day of our University's first home football game.

We invite you and your family to visit our campus and participate in the many wonderful activities where you will meet other parents and witness firsthand why your student is excited about attending the University of Memphis.  You may choose to visit the Art Museum or the Ned R. McWherter Library, attend a concert, theatre or sporting event, or participate in other facets of our rich campus life.

If we can be of assistance to you or your student during this beginning, please do not hesitate to contact us.  On behalf of the students, faculty and staff, welcome to the University of Memphis!

Shirley C. Raines

President, University of Memphis

About President Shirley C. Raines

Like sand through an hour glass, so have passed the days of summer.  In seven days your student will officially become a part of the University of Memphis family when classes start on Monday, August 29.   If your student is moving into one of our dorms the U of M staff will be available to offer move-in assistance and a friendly smile during Warm Welcome starting on August 25.  Welcome Week begins on August 26 with eleven days of planned activities for our students.  Then we will slide right into Homecoming on October 22.  This year's theme is "Tigers Back to the 80’s" with a sub-theme of “The Bigger the Hair, the Better the Homecoming!”  There is a lot of fun planned with this theme including costume contests, 80’s movies and more.  We hope you all are as excited as we are!

Till next month….may you be safe and happy.

Student Support Services: Your Student Can Succeed With It!

The Student Support Services (SSS) program at The University of Memphis is a grant-funded TRiO program provided by the Department of Education. At the U of M, the goal of SSS is to assist qualified students in attending and eventually graduating from college. Our goal is simple:  We want our students to graduate!  We understand that many students at The University of Memphis have to overcome significant educational barriers to their education.  Student Support Services is here to help.

TRiO - Student Support Services provides a supportive environment where students can feel comfortable asking for help.  Tutoring, academic and personal counseling, career guidance, intensive academic advising and study skills assistance are only a few of the many services we offer at NO COST to program participants.

Your student may be eligible if he or she is a U.S. citizen or permanent resident who has been accepted for enrollment at The University of Memphis and meets one or more of the following criteria:

Is a first generation, college student (neither parent/guardian who had custody of the student has a four-year college degree)

Meets Federal low income eligibility requirement

Is a student with a documented disability

Space is limited, and participants are selected on a first-come, first-served basis.  So don’t wait because YOUR STUDENT CAN SUCCEED WITH IT!  Eligible students are urged to apply as soon as possible.  For more information, visit our website at http://saweb.memphis.edu/trio.

Allow SSS to provide your student with the tools needed to make their educational goals become a reality!
