Fall Semester - A Time For Parents To Revisit Discussions About College Drinking
According to research summarized in a College Task Force
report to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), the
consequences of excessive drinking by college students are more significant,
more destructive, and more costly than many parents realize. Moreover, these
consequences affect students whether or not they drink.
For parents who want to talk to their college-age sons and
daughters about the consequences of college drinking, a variety of helpful
resources are available from NIAAA. A new fact sheet for parents, "Fall
Semester - A Time For Parents To Revisit Discussions About College
Drinking," offers research-based information plus helpful advice on
choosing the right college, staying involved during the freshman year, and
getting assistance if faced with an alcohol-related crisis.

Campus safety continues to be a priority at the U of M. To address imminent, natural or manmade threats, we have installed an outdoor warning system that includes voice and public address capabilities and we have launched Tiger Text for cell phone text alerts. For daily safety, we are adding more emergency phones and cameras to the campus grounds. We continue to add software driven locking capabilities to campus facilities for better access control. Additionally, we conducted a lighting survey with the SGA and Physical Plant at the start of the semester to improve campus lighting. Students also have access to Tiger Patrol, an official University escort program staffed by students employed by the University Police Department or by University police officers. Students, faculty or staff can call Tiger Patrol escorts to accompany them after dark between buildings on campus or to and from their parked cars. For more information about safety and security on the University of Memphis campus, contact Bruce Harber, director of University Police Services, at 901/678-3848 or visit http://bf.memphis.edu/police/.
