RESIDENCE LIFE NEWS

RESIDENCE HALL ASSOCIATION

The Residence Hall Association provides transportation on the Krogermobile once a week for the students who would like to purchase groceries.  A schedule is posted in the lobbies of the buildings.

TIGER LEARNING CENTER

The Tiger Learning Center is located in Richardson Towers South and is open and staffed 80 hours a week for tutoring, quiet study, or word processor use.

RENT REFUND POLICIES

Refund of residence hall rent after check-in will be prorated on a weekly calendar basis when the student is forced to withdraw from the residence halls, (1) because of personal medical reasons confirmed in writing by a licensed physician, or (2) at the request of the institution for other than disciplinary reasons.  Seventy-five percent of rent will be refunded to residents withdrawing from the residence halls for a period of fourteen calendar days beginning with, and including, the first official day of check-in.  Twenty-five percent of rent will be refunded to residents withdrawing from the residence halls after the expiration of the seventy-five percent rent refund period.  The twenty-five percent refund period ends upon expiration of one fourth of the semester for which rent was due.

BURSAR OFFICE NEWS

Reminder:  To avoid a $25 late payment fee, students who elected to pay their Fall 2004 fees using the Installment Payment Plan must pay the second installment by October 1, 2004.

Excess financial aid for First Time Freshman Borrowers will be direct deposited or mailed beginning October 4, 2004.

COUNSELING SERVICES AVAILABLE

Career Counseling Services are available to any current student, former student, prospective student, as well as individuals with career concerns. They can benefit from counseling and career assessments for a nominal fee. A computerized career exploration program, DISCOVER, is also available. A career library with books about various careers, magazines, and other resource material is in place for student use. Career Counseling Services are confidential.

Psychological Counseling Services provides confidential individual, couples, family, and group counseling to all students registered for at least six credit hours. Assessments services,
including personality, learning disorders, and ADHD are available for a nominal fee. Walk in crisis counseling services during regular office hours and after hours on call crisis
counseling services are available.
 The above services are provided by career counselors, licensed psychologists, pre-doctoral psychology interns, and counseling/clinical psychology practicum students.

HOMECOMING INFORMATION

Show your True Blue pride by taking part in this year's Homecoming celebration! A parade, pep rally and a party will highlight this year's festivities, followed by the big game against the Houston Cougars at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 2.

The campus will come alive Friday afternoon, October 1, as the parade hits the streets at 5:30 p.m., ending in the Central Avenue parking lot at 6:00 p.m. A pep rally will follow with appearances by President Shirley Raines and Coach Tommy West, musical group Ingram Hill, the Pom and Cheer Squads, Tom II and Pouncer. Friday's events are capped by an Alumni Association party at the campus Holiday Inn at 7:00 p.m.

SERVICE ON SATURDAY

This is a student volunteer effort which has been very successful on campus.  First effort of the fall is this Saturday, September 18, from 8:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.  Sign up in SAC office in University Center 425.  Free breakfast and lunch, transportation provided, can help complete service hours.  Call 678-2035 for more information.

SOUTHERN FESTIVAL OF BOOKS

The University of Memphis is proud to sponsor the 2004 Southern Festival of Books: A Celebration of the Written Word. The annual festival, usually held in Nashville, will take place Oct. 8 - 10 at Cook Convention Center and the Civic Plaza in downtown Memphis.

The event will feature more than 200 authors, 70 exhibitors, three performance stages and special events for children. Among the authors confirmed to appear are Robert Olen Butler, Janell Cannon, Andrei Codrescu, Debra Dickerson, Clyde Edgerton, James Ellroy, Horton Foote, Kaye Gibbons, Travis Hunter, Cassandra King, Alan Lightman, Brent Lott, Jill McCorkle, Ridley Pearson, Arthur Phillips, Adriana Trigiani, Elijah Wald and Paul Zelinsky.

The U of M will host a booth at the festival displaying information on upcoming University events and books by our professors. President Shirley Raines, an expert in early childhood education, will be a "celebrity reader" on the Children's Stage from 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 9.

In conjunction with the festival, two Continuing Education classes will be offered: one is a short course on the songs and stories Clyde Edgerton, a major southern writer who will be featured at the festival. A second class will lead students on a tour of Memphis' literary landmarks. You can register for these courses at http://www.coned.memphis.edu.

CAREER SERVICES INFORMATION

To put students in contact with potential employers for purposes of finding a full time job upon graduation, internships, and or community service opportunities, the University of Memphis Career and Employment Services will host a Career and Internship Expo on Wednesday, September 22, from 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. In addition, the Office of Student Activities will host the Volunteer Fair.  These events will be held in the University Center Ballroom and Faulkner Lounge.

If your son or daughter is thinking about getting an advanced degree and plans to attend graduate school, they should attend the Graduate and Professional Information School Fair on Thursday, September 23 from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.  Admission representatives from graduate schools across the country will be available to meet with. The event will be held in the University Center Ballroom and Faulkner Lounge.

All fairs are free and open to all students and alumni.  Those attending the Career/Internship Fair are encouraged to dress professionally and bring resumes.

For assistance with resumes or basic interview skills, plan to attend a free one hour "Lunch and Learn" series to begin Sept. 15 from 12:30 p.m . - 1:30 p.m. in Wilder Tower 400.   Free pizza and sodas will be provided.  These seminars hosted by Career and Employment Services will be presented by major employers in the community and are available on a walk in basis.  The seminars will continue on a weekly basis (Wednesdays at lunch time) through November 10.

These dinners are free for students with meal plans.

Sept. 16 - All Dorm Night - Any student is invited to attend dinner to meet and make new friends. All you care to eat $4.50 or use your meal plan. This dinner's theme is Seafood,
with items such as fried catfish, fried shrimp, crab cakes, smoked catfish, seafood gumbo, jambalaya and Cajun pasta. 
Sept. 20 - Wings and Things - Just a fun dinner specializing in favorite chicken dishes. Items such as buffalo chicken pizza, a wing station where you can select your own sauce, 
fried chicken, chicken alfredo and much more. All you care to eat $6.50 without a meal plan.
Sept. 23 - Birthday Bash - We decorate for the birthday students including a giant birthday card.  Assorted birthday cakes and ice cream.  Menu includes steak, baked potato bar
and seafood pasta. $6.50 without a meal plan.

Sept. 30 - Backyard BBQ - World famous Memphis BBQ, smoked right on campus. We will decorate picnic style. The menu will have BBQ favorites such as BBQ pizza, chicken,
 pork shoulder, rib tips, grilled hamburgers, cobbler and all the proper picnic fixins. $6.50 without a meal plan.

Every Monday after the Tigers win the football game, we celebrate with 1/2 price burritos, salads and nachos at TOM's.  Selections include items such as the Tommy West or 
John Calipari burrito and everybody's favorite, Stan's the Man, taco salad.
