Parent E-News

October 3, 2007

Our condolences go out to the family and friends of Taylor Bradford.

“We will miss him dearly. He will be remembered. He loved to play football. He loved his family, he loved his friends and he loved Kappa. He was always full of innovation and ideas. If you were around him, you were going to have a good time.”

-Will Terrell, President of Kappa Alpha Psi (the fraternity with which Bradford was affiliated)

Please visit our homepage www.memphis.edu as it will contain updated news concerning the tragedy.

We are urging all faculty, staff and students to sign up for our TigerText emergency alert system. A U of M UUID is required to sign up and at the moment we are not making the service available to others. However, students, faculty, and staff can sign up two cell phone numbers with TigerText using their own account – one can be a parent’s number if they wish. They may do this at tigertext.memphis.edu.

FINANCIAL AID

Spring 2008 is right around the corner!!   If your child is admitted as a degree-seeking student, he/she can still apply for federal aid for the remainder of the 2007-2008 academic year by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).  Go on line to:  www.fafsa.ed.gov.   An electronic copy of the student’s FAFSA will be sent to the financial aid office if he/she list The University of Memphis’ federal school code, which is 003509.  It is highly recommended that students follow up with the financial aid office after 7 to 10 business days to see if they have their FAFSA results.

The financial aid office NO LONGER mails any request for required forms or documents.  Students now need to go directly to the Spectrum Portal at http://my.memphis.edu.  Once they enter their User Name and Password, select the Account$ tab.  Their Financial Aid Requirements, if any, will be listed with red flags next to them.  They can download most of the required forms from the Financial Aid web page at: http://www.enrollment.memphis.edu/FinancialAid/  then click on Financial Aid Forms.

To see if they have been awarded, students can click on the Financial Aid Awards link.

Students can check Spectrum for their personal updated financial aid information or call the financial aid office at (901) 678-4825 if they have any questions.  If they have a scholarship inquiry, please contact the Scholarship Office directly at (901) 678-3213.

REGISTRAR

PARENTS AND GRADES

“Can I see my student’s grades?” No, not unless you have your student's consent or you can show that the student is still a dependent for federal income tax purposes.
This may seem strange to you, but federal law prevents us from releasing a student's information to anyone but the student unless we have the student's written consent. The specific law is the Family Educational Right to Privacy Act (FERPA), also known as the Buckley Amendment. We recommend that you follow this procedure and that you talk to your student at every stage:

·         Ask your student to show you his or her grades on Student Self Service.

·         If this isn't practical, ask your student to complete a “Student Consent to Release Education Record” form that would permit the Registrar to release a copy of the grades to you. For further information, including a link to the form, see Student Consent to Release Education Record.

·         If your student is unwilling to complete the consent form, you can complete a “Request for Disclosure of Education Record Information” form, provided your student is a dependent for tax purposes. For further information, including a link to the form, see Parent Request for Student Record.

TESTING CENTER

Shorten the Path to a Degree

Testing out of a class might be an option for your student. Check it out now and your student may be graduating sooner than you expected. It is possible for students to “test out” of some classes and receive course credit at the University of Memphis. Acceptable scores must be attained by a student taking a test for course credit. We give CLEP, DANTES and Credit by Exam tests. Inquire at the Testing Center on campus for information about the various tests offered.
