December
goes by in a flash! Students have been finishing up those final papers and
tests before finals kick off in a couple of days! Once again, encourage your
student to find the healthy balance between studying, rest, healthy eating, and
recreation as they prepare for final exams. Offer support by phoning (but not
too often), sending emails, writing letters, or sending care packages. Also,
remember that “re-adjusting” to routines at home during the semester break can
be challenging to both students and parents. Keep that in mind as they return
home, but enjoy the time you will have with them during the holidays. Happy
Holidays!

SPRING 2008 REGISTRATION
Registration for the Spring 2008 semester is now underway; undergraduate registration began November 14, with Seniors registering first. Undergraduates register in this order:
- Seniors: 11-14-07
- Juniors: 11-16-07
- Sophomores: 11-19-07
- Freshmen: 11-21-07
Undergraduate classification for registration is determined by the number of credit hours a student has earned. Seniors have 90 or more hours, Juniors have 60-89 hours, Sophomores have 30-59 hours, and Freshmen have under 30. Students who are unclear about their classification can check their Registration Status on Student Self Service: http://spectrum.memphis.edu
It is always a good idea for students to check their Registration Status screen before registration opens. In addition to identifying student classification, the Status screen also lets students know if they have any Holds that will prevent registration. Student Self Service will not let students register before their classification’s date, and it will not let them register if they have any Registration Holds.
Students should review their schedules immediately after registering and again just before the first day of classes: class building and room assignments are sometimes changed at the last minute. Also, students occasionally register for an off-campus offering when they mean to register for main campus offerings only. They should check their schedule campus location to make sure they understand where the course is being offered.
The Spring 2008 semester will be here before you know it!! If your student is admitted as a degree-seeking student, he or she can still apply for federal aid for the remainder of the 2007-2008 academic year by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This application is good for the Spring 2008 and Summer 2008 semesters. Your student can go on-line to: www.fafsa.ed.gov. An electronic copy of your student’s FAFSA will be sent to the Financial Aid Office if he or she lists The University of Memphis’ federal school code, which is 003509. It is highly recommended that your student follows up with the Financial Aid Office after 7 to 10 business days to see if the office has his or her FAFSA results.
After the Financial Aid Office receives the results of your student’s FAFSA, your student can find out his or her financial aid status by going directly to the Spectrum Portal at http://my.memphis.edu. Your student needs to log in with his or her User Name and Password and select the Account$ tab. His or her Financial Aid Requirements, if any, will be listed with red flags next to them. Your student can download most of the required forms from the Financial Aid web page at: http://www.enrollment.memphis.edu/FinancialAid/ and then click on Financial Aid Forms.
To see if your student has been awarded, he or she can click on the Financial Aid Awards link on the Spectrum Portal.
IMPORTANT!!
The 2008-2009 FAFSA – which applies to Fall 2008, Spring 2009, and Summer 2009 – will be available on-line beginning January 2, 2008.
Please note that students are responsible for activating their University of Memphis e-mail account, which is our means of communicating to our students. The University of Memphis NO LONGER mails any letters or award notifications through regular (postal) mail.
If you or your student has any questions or concerns, please call the Financial Aid Office at (901) 678-4825 or visit the office at Room 103 in Wilder Tower. If your student has a scholarship inquiry, please contact the Scholarship Office directly at (901) 678-3213 or go to Room 107 in Wilder Tower.
The Financial Aid Office will be closed for the Christmas Holiday from December 24 through December 28 and on January 1 for the New Year’s Day Holiday. Thank you!
Fall 2007 Closing
The University of Memphis residence halls will close for the semester break on Friday, December 15, 2007, at 3 PM. All residents are required to leave the residence halls 24 hours after their final exam, unless they are involved in commencement exercises.
Residents of Carpenter Complex and Richardson Towers do not have to vacate their rooms during the semester break unless their Spring 2008 room assignment has been canceled.
Residents required to vacate their rooms during semester break will not be allowed to remain or be readmitted to the buildings during the semester break. The residence hall staff will not be available to permit reentry into the buildings after closing.
Residents of Rawls, Smith, South, and Mynders are required to sign up for an appointment to check out and surrender their room keys to their resident advisors before they leave. Residents of Richardson Towers and Carpenter Complex should sign up for a room inspection.
Students who are not returning to the residence halls in the Spring must officially check out of the room no later than 3 PM on December 14 and cancel in writing with the Residence Life and Dining Services Office in Richardson Towers.
Students who are returning for the Spring are not required to remove their belongings from their rooms during the break; however, they should take all valuables and possessions needed during this time period.
The buildings will reopen at 1 PM on January 11, 2008.
Spring 2008 rent must be paid by January 11, 2008, for the 2008 Spring Semester. Payments may be paid in advance by mail to The University of Memphis, Bursar’s Office, P. O. Box 1000, Department 313, Memphis, TN 38148-0313 or may be paid in person in 115 Wilder Tower or online at http://bf.memphis.edu/ebursar. If a resident is receiving financial aid or is unable to make payment in full, the resident may be placed on an installment plan. There is an additional charge of $40.00 added to your student’s account if he or she is placed on the installment plan. If your student is receiving financial aid or scholarships for the Spring 2008 Semester, all aid will be applied toward any debts owed the University, such as rent.
Spring 2008 Check-In Dates
Friday, January 11, 2008 or Saturday, January 12, 2008
1 PM – 4:30 PM
All assigned rooms must be claimed by 4:30 PM on Saturday, January 12, 2008. Residents failing to properly check into their rooms by the above stated deadline will forfeit their room assignment and their $200 rent prepayment. In order to prevent the room and rent prepayment from being forfeited, the student must contact the Residence Life and Dining Services Office, 011 Richardson Towers, 901-678-2295 and request to be placed on the Late Arrival’s List if the student will be late checking into the room.
Spring 2008 Room Change
Thursday, January 17 or Friday, January 18
The Early Intervention program at the U of M is designed to notify students that they are not performing satisfactorily in a particular course. This “intervention” takes place early enough that the student may seek assistance from a faculty member or an advisor and get on track, or else drop that course by the official drop date, without academic penalty. Early Intervention forms are submitted by faculty during approximately the second to the sixth week of classes. The reports are processed by the Academic Status and Retention Office, and distributed to the appropriate college advisors or to advisors at the Academic Counseling Center—who in turn contact the student by phone or email. Any further action by the student is voluntary, but students may be encouraged to seek tutoring, study skills and time management advising, personal counseling or other support services.
This program was piloted during the Fall of 2007. Nearly 800 reports were submitted and acted upon. Students reported appreciation for the intervention, and the faculty appreciates having yet another formal mechanism to help students succeed. Given the success of the program, it will continue in Spring 2008. For more information, please call the Office of Academic Status and Retention at 901-678-2393.
e-CHUG
e-CHUG is up and running for University of Memphis
students. It is an electronic Check-Up to Go (e-CHUG) and provides the
participants with accurate, detailed and personalized feedback on the use of
alcohol, and specific information and helpful resources in the University of
Memphis community. This has been provided for the University of Memphis by
CHASCO, Coalition for Healthy and Safe Campus Communities of Tennessee. The
program is located at http://interwork.sdsu.edu/echug2/Memphis/ .
